Lucy Shuker, the number one British wheelchair tennis player wins big at the Belgian Open Finals

Double Win for Wheelchair Tennis Number One

01/09/2010

Britain's top wheelchair tennis player, Lucy Shuker, rose in the world rankings after securing wins in both the women’s singles and doubles finals at the Belgian Open.

The Belgian Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Namur saw Lucy fend off the world number eight, Annick Sevenans, to pull off the biggest win of her career to date.  This win closely followed a doubles triumph, partnered by Sharon Walraven.

Lucy  has been paralysed from the neck down since a motorbike accident in 2001.  She has won a plethora of sporting awards including a Wheel Power Sports Award in 2005 and has a string of admirable achievements including competing in the 2008 Beijing Paralympics.

2010 is set to be Lucy’s most successful year yet in Wheelchair tennis.  Already she has claimed four doubles titles and, following her exploits in Belgium, is set to rise from a ranking of 12 to return to the world’s top 10.
