Money will be used to support disabled children and adults in leisure activities

New Funding for Disabled Leisure Activities

20/02/2012

Capability Scotland has been awarded funding through the Bank of Scotland Foundation to help people with disabilities in social and cultural activities.

Research shows that over a third of people with disabilities are less likely to participate in sports, leisure or cultural activities.  This is due to barriers faced such as a lack of accessible venues, high transport costs for disabled vehicles and a shortage of facilities.  The funding will allow Capability Scotland to address some of these issues.

Practical Support for Disabled

Part of the money will be used to fund staff members to accompany individuals to leisure activities of their choice.  It will also be used to help with transport costs so disabled people can get to their local sports and community centres and other leisure facilities in their area.

Richard Hamer, Capability Director of External Affairs, commented: “Capability Scotland is delighted to have been granted this award.  Being able to take part in sport and leisure activities is hugely beneficial to a person’s welfare.  Some disabled people are denied opportunities because of the barriers which exist.

“This funding will allow us to offer practical support to many disabled adults and children who would be otherwise cut off from enjoying sports, leisure and cultural activities.”

Kate Guthrie, Chair of the Bank of Scotland Foundation's Board of Trustees, added: “There are so many charities in Scotland urgently needing funding so they can continue to support their local communities and we are delighted to be able to help a number of them each year. We know they will bring valuable support throughout Scotland and in the communities they work closely with.”
