Mary’s Keen to Burn Some Rubber
Mary Laver, from Newcastle, is always desperate to get out and about in her power chair. But she isn’t satisfied with a quick dash to the shops!
The bold adventurer looks to ride 20 to 30 miles when she heads for the countryside and one day hopes to travel from Land’s End to John O’Groats or even Perth to Sidney. That’s why she decided to set up a club for like-minded people who use power chairs, scooters and trikes and want to enjoy the great outdoors.
Support
Mary explains that these trips would only be possible if support groups were involved: “If you break down on your own, how do you get home?” Mary’s previous attempt to travel from Land’s End to John O’Groats in her power chair failed on the first day because her support team was too small.
Her ideal trip would involve larger groups: “Some people would be in power chairs, some on scooters and someone driving a van ahead. We'd have a generator so we could all stop for a beer and a sandwich and charge our batteries up!”
Mary hopes to have her club up and running this spring and has high hopes for future trips to Cuba and Australia. Anyone is able to join the club, provided they can operate a power chair, scooter or trike. Mary says the only limits to what the club could do would be members’ imaginations!
