Kenneth and Florence Atkinson, from Kendal in Cumbria, are looking forward to enjoying more country drives together this summer thanks to their new Peugeot Impulse mobility car.
The couple had previously owned a wheelchair accessible vehicle but when it came to renewing they decided they would like a car where Florence could sit in her wheelchair beside Kenneth. They were delighted to discover that the Peugeot Impulse, from Allied Mobility, is specially converted to allow a wheelchair passenger to sit in the front passenger position.
Kenneth comments: “We like to spend days out and about in our car but the fact Florence sat in the back in our old mobility car while I was in the front made it difficult to have a conversation.
“We came across an Allied Mobility advert and they seemed to offer a wide range of wheelchair accessible vehicles so we gave them a call to find out what options were available to us. We were happy to find out there was a car in the Peugeot Impulse that would allow Florence to sit beside me when we travel. We booked a demonstration so we could see the car for ourselves.
“Our mobility consultant, Neil, brought the Impulse to our home and both myself and my wife were very impressed," recalls Kenneth. The way I simply pushed her wheelchair up the ramp and straight into the front passenger position was brilliant, it was exactly what we wanted. I think Florence had made up her mind before Neil left!”
Based on the Peugeot Bipper, Impulse has been cleverly converted to allow wheelchair users to sit in an up-front passenger position or even to drive the vehicle. With a completely flat floor, remote controlled tailgate and ramp and removable front seats, this specialised mobility car is perfect for those who prefer to sit in the front passenger position and removes the need to transfer from your wheelchair.
Once inside, up-front wheelchair passengers are safeguarded by a click-in docking station or traditional wheelchair restraint system. Either securing system can be used to lock the chair in place, ensuring a safe and comfortable journey.
Kenneth continues: “I find attaching the restraint system really straight forward and Florence feels very secure. From the moment we leave the house to getting into the car and setting off only takes about ten minutes, which is great for us.
"The fact the ramp is quite short also means we have no trouble accessing the vehicle in smaller spaces.
“When we’re out and people see me moving Florence in and out of the vehicle they come up tell us how brilliant they think the car is, which is really nice but they’re preaching to the converted!
“The service we received from Allied Mobility was very good. We were kept informed on the progress of our car and Neil was very courteous and helpful. He really took his time to explain the car to us and show us how brilliant it was. We couldn’t be happier with our new car!”
The Peugeot Impulse up front wheelchair passenger car is available to buy direct or for lease through the Motability Cars Scheme.
