Ask around and most people would say that their wedding day is the most special day of their lives. But with incredible amounts of planning going into organising just one day, special can quickly turn stressful. When designer Tori Brooker began planning her nuptials, she decided to make the day work around her and created a wedding that was high on accessibility and low on stress.
Tori has spinal muscular atrophy type two and uses a powerchair full time so every aspect of the day had to be fully accessible for it to work. David, who is able-bodied was happy to let Tori plan to perfection everything that mattered to her.
First was the venue. The couple fell in love with the idea of a summer wedding in the peace and tranquillity of a country house setting. However, finding a period country house with full accessibility proved tricky. After visiting and discarding several venues that just weren’t quite suitable, they chose the impressive Muddifords Court in South Devon. With an accessible barn for the ceremony, a bridal suite complete with ramped access and bags of outside space, the venue was perfect.
Dress to Impress
Next on the list was the all-important dress. A designer by profession, Tori was keen to wear something that was different and stood out while she was in her wheelchair. Tori used her creative prowess to customise her dress to perfection. She removed the train of the garment so it didn’t snag on her powerchair wheels then used the excess material to fashion a sleeve to cover her lap belt.
Tori quips: “I instantly fell in love with my feather gown and still contemplate adorning it daily.”
Together with her florist, Tori set about designing a cascading floral display for the back and seat of her powerchair to make it just as special. To ensure Tori was able to keep her hands free to drive her powerchair she designed a floral wreath headdress. Practical and chic!
A Day to Remember
Thanks to Tori’s hard work planning the day around her needs, Tori and David created a stress-free event that the couple will remember for a lifetime.
Tori reminisces: “I have never felt so lucky to marry my best friend on our most perfect, and inclusive wedding day. It was absolutely beautiful. I couldn’t have asked for more.”
