Battling Blue Badge Fraud

November 19, 2018

According to Blue Badge Fraud Investigation (BBFI), the specialist investigative fraud team, there are 2.5 million blue badges on issue in England and Wales.

As winners of the 2018 Disabled Motoring UK (DMUK) Parking Enforcement award, BBFI and in particular director, Paul Slowey, know the impact blue badge fraud has on disabled people.  Fiercely passionate about the rights of disabled people, Paul and his company have amassed over 5,000 prosecutions relating to blue badge misuse.

“Winning the DMUK parking enforcement award is recognition of all the hard work the team have put in over the last 10 years.”

Changing Behaviour

Paul explains the majority of fraud occurs when third parties are caught using the blue badge of a holder when they’re not present.  This type of misuse stops genuine holders from using the benefits of the badge; including being able to park closer to their destination as their disability impacts their mobility.

However, Paul states he has witnessed a shift in this type of fraud as driver’s become more aware of the severity of this crime.  He explains:

“We’re seeing driver behaviour change for the better due to BBFI’s work across the country.”

Punishment to Fit the Crime

Misuse of the blue badge is a criminal offence and could lead to fines of up to £1,000 and badge confiscation.  BBFI’s quest to educate, and if necessary, prosecute, has definitely had a positive impact on blue badge misuse.

Paul has trained over 1,000 investigators to not only spot the most common occurrences of fraud, but also tackle the more intricate cases including car vandalism resulting in theft of a blue badge.

Getting Results

Paul states the most enjoyable part of the job is “meeting genuinely disabled motorists who thank us for inspecting badges and enforcing the scheme.” It’s certainly BBFI’s dedication to enforcing the law of blue badge fraud that earned them the Parking Enforcement accolade at the DMUK Awards.  A delighted Paul said:

“Winning the DMUK parking enforcement award is recognition of all the hard work the team have put in over the last 10 years.”
