Anne Gilfillan and her six year old son, Thomas, have discovered a new level of independence with their “brilliant” new wheelchair accessible car from Allied Mobility.
The family lives in the small town of Denny, near Stirling. Thomas uses a wheelchair, so trips that would normally take around twenty minutes were instead taking him and his mum hours, regularly using several buses. Then Anne made the decision to find a wheelchair accessible vehicle to make both of their lives easier and more enjoyable.
Anne recalls: “The Peugeot Independence was the obvious choice for us.”
“Everything about the car is ideal for our family. It’s so easy to use and the seating layoutwe chose is a real bonus for us – the fact that Thomas can sit in the middle, immediately behind the front seats, instead of being away at the back, is fantastic.
He’s much more comfortable and relaxed travelling in his wheelchair rather than a car seat and it means if he has a seizure whilst travelling, there’s someone sitting right next to him who can tend to him straight away.”
Thomas’s Uncle Andy helps out as a carer and finds driving the Independence a pleasure. The extra space in the car also means that Thomas’s big brother, David and his grandparents can all come along on days out and join in with activities, with plenty of room for everyone.
Based on the popular Peugeot Expert Tepee, Independence is an accommodating and flexible wheelchair vehicle that can carry as many as six seated passengers as well as the driver and wheelchair passenger. With its lowered floor and EasyFold™ wheelchair ramp, Independence makes travelling with a wheelchair as convenient as possible.
Anne notes: “The access ramp is incredibly easy to use and makes getting Thomas’s wheelchair in and out of the car so simple. The amount of space in Independence means that we never feel cramped when we’re travelling and Thomas can even bring his beanbag on outings so he can relax out of his wheelchair when we get there, which is great.
“Our new found freedom with the Independence is amazing. We can take Thomas to the sensory room and the park, which he loves. It also means our regular hospital visits no longer require a three hour round trip by bus and are much less stressful for everyone.
“Next we’re planning to take Thomas to the safari park, which is something we could never have done before!”
“Choosing a car with Allied Mobility couldn’t have been easier,” says Anne.
“The positive feedback about Allied that we came across was important in our decision and they have such a great range of vehicles to choose from.
“Our local mobility advisor, Ian, came out to our house and showed us all we needed to know about the Independence. He explained everything clearly and answered each of our questions.”
Anne and Thomas are certainly making the most of their new independence and Anne concludes: “Now I only wish we’d gone for our wheelchair accessible car years ago.
“It’s made such a massive, positive difference to our lives and I would recommend Allied Mobility to anyone.”
