Leasing your WAV with the Motability Scheme

The Motability Car Scheme allows you to use your qualifying disability allowance towards the cost of leasing your own car. The Scheme is open to people in receipt of one of the following disability allowances:

  • The higher rate mobility part of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Enhanced rate part of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) (known as Child/ Adult Disability Payment if you live in Scotland)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)

To make things easier for you, the Scheme will receive your qualifying allowance directly from your provider.

What about the Advance Payment?

In addition to your monthly payment to the Motability Scheme, you will have to pay an Advance Payment (AP) which is a one-off, upfront payment made directly to us.

Due to a WAV’s specialised conversion, the AP for a wheelchair accessible car can be slightly higher than the AP for a standard car. If your chosen WAV is outwith your budget, the Motability WAV Grant Programme can help cover the cost of:

  • Advance Payments towards a WAV leased through the Motability Scheme.
  • Adaptations for Scheme WAVs needed mid-lease due to a change in your circumstances.

Who can apply for the WAV Grant Programme?

Disabled People using a wheelchair who:

  • Want to join the Motability Scheme and need help with funding their disability vehicle.
  • Are currently on the Motability Scheme but their lease is ending and cannot afford their next lease.

Grant applications are means-tested. Motability will consider your financial situation including household income and savings when deciding on your grant award amount.

This ensures that those most in need of financial help are supported and as many people can benefit from the Scheme as possible.
