Wheelchair Users Take to the Runway

Manual wheelchair users established a new world record by successfully pulling a 65 tonne Boeing 757 airliner 100 metres along the main runway of Lasham airfield, Hampshire.

Donations are currently still coming in for the event but it is expected that a fantastic £20,000 was raised for the British Disabled Flyers Association (BDFA).

Mike Miller-Smith, Chief Executive of the BDFA, said:  “The challenge did three things for us: firstly, it raised a bit of money, secondly it helped us raise our profile, and thirdly it was a good example of what is possible with a bit of teamwork.”

Months of preparation were undertaken prior to the event which involved tests pulling a car and then pulling airplanes a few meters before the 38 strong team attempted the ultimate challenge.

“The support we had was fantastic and, for the 38 disabled people from all around the UK who took part, it was great fun and an achievement really to be proud of.  We really did demonstrate the ability of disability!” commented Mike.
