Disabled Voice

A community disability group based in Grimsby is appealing for more people to join them as they help to give disabled people a voice within the local community.

The North East Lincolnshire Disability Access group (NELDA) has already gained support from the local council, policing teams and transport representatives.  The group aim to highlight issues which affect disabled people such as disabled vehicles parking.

NELDA also campaign for equal opportunities for disabled people while raising awareness of  disability issues through lobbying parliament and working with statutory agencies.  Philip Dumbrell, Vice-chairman of the group, comments: “I joined NELDA because there are a lot of disabled residents where I live in East Marsh and I am determined to support them.

Highlighting Disability Issues

“This is a charity of disabled people for disabled people and at the moment we are discussing the likelihood of people having to pay to use disabled parking bays.  It’s something that could happen in the future and we need to voice our opinion now.”

Wheelchair user and Chairman of the group, Miriam Mitcheson, who has been with NELDA for more than 15 years, comments: “We campaigned about 15 years ago for Asda to put disabled spaces nearer the supermarket doors and we were successful.  It felt good when we finally achieved that.  We are always on the lookout for new members to keep the group going for years to come.”
