The Department for Transport has opened a consultation on how to bring the process of assessing eligibility for blue badge parking badges for disabled vehicles in to line with the wider reforms on disability benefits.

Under the current benefits system, to be eligible for a blue badge you need to receive the higher rate of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA).  Under the new system, due to be introduced in 2013, DLA will be replaced with the Personal Independence Payment (PIP).  The Department for Transport wants to ensure a smooth transition when the new structure is introduced.

The consultation, published this week, outlines the options under consideration.  The preferred option will use the criteria in the new PIP system that most closely corresponds to those currently used by local authorities to carry out their own assessments.

It’s expected the change in process will not significantly affect the overall number of people entitled to a blue badge.
