A revolutionary new washing machine had been invented that allows specially trained Support Dogs to take over laundry duty for people with disabilities.  The ‘Woof to Wash’, created by inventor John Middleton, has the potential to be invaluable to many people who currently rely on the assistance of a Support Dog.

Productive Paws

Controlled by the combination of a mounted paw pad, microphone system and pull-rope, the machine is designed to make it easy for the support dog to operate.  The dog uses his paw to unlock the door, and then opens it by pulling a rope with his mouth.  Once the machine is loaded, the dog simply pushes the door closed with his nose and then barks to operate it.  Detergent is added from a built in storage bottle.

Dealing with Disabilities

John Middleton, CEO of specialist UK laundry company JTM, recognised the demand for the Woof to Wash.  He says: “People with disabilities and mobility problems can find the complexity of modern day washing machines too much.

“I saw a video from the charity Support Dogs, where a dog strips a bed and loads the washing machine.  I was completely blown away by the footage and instantly thought I could invent a machine where the dog does everything.”

The washing machine was unveiled in November at Support Dogs headquarters in Sheffield, with plans for it to be available to thousands of people in the UK in the near future.
