Twice the Independence for the Rothwell’s

For many, a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) with space for a powered wheelchair or mobility scooter can be the ideal solution to make a difference to everyday life.  But for Emma Rothwell from Norfolk, something even more bespoke was called for as there are two wheelchair users in her family.  Luckily, they found exactly what they needed; a simple step up from their beloved existing mobility car, Ford Tourneo Custom Independence™ to the roomier  Ford Independence™ Twin from Allied Mobility.  For the Rothwell’s, their new wheelchair accessible vehicle offered the space and convenience they wanted and they’re delighted with their decision.

Double the Trouble on Family Outings

Emma lives with her husband and two children.  She has Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a condition that her daughter also lives with.  Until recently, the family relied on their WAV for everything from trips to the supermarket to days out together.  They loved the accessibility and comfort of the Independence™ and it was the perfect size for Emma to travel in her wheelchair.  But recently, when Emma’s daughter upgraded to a powerchair of her own, travelling together as a family of four became difficult.

Emma explains: “We sometimes had to leave one of us behind or take two trips each way.  It was difficult for my husband as he had to drive twice as much.  We live in a lovely area and we couldn’t go anywhere as a family.”

An Independent Solution

Already Allied Mobility customers, the Rothwell’s got in touch with their local mobility advisor to discuss their changing needs.  Emma and her husband were thrilled to learn about the Ford Independence™ Twin, an accessible car just like their existing Independence™, but with a longer wheelbase offering space for both powerchairs.  Independence™ Twin still carried all the features the family loved, like a lightweight ramp, built in electric winch and eight-inch colour touchscreen, but with the added benefit of much more room.

Emma laughs: “Technically this is our second WAV but it’s pretty much identical to the first except it takes both powerchairs.  We even chose the same colour!”

To Windsor with the WAV

Since the arrival of their new WAV, travelling together as a family of four is back on the agenda and, thankfully for Emma’s husband, double the amount of driving is now a thing of the past.  Recently, they’ve even been able to get away as a family for a weekend in Windsor, with Independence™ Twin comfortably carrying their wheelchairs and luggage.

Emma concludes: “We had a lovely time away thanks to the Independence™ Twin and it’s so nice to finally get out together as a family again.”
