Disabled Mum Waits Six Months for Parking Space

Claire Lomas, the mum who made headlines in 2012 walking a marathon in a specially designed suit, has taken to painting her own disabled parking space after being ignored by her local council.

Claire is mum to four year old daughter Maisie who has just started school and had requested a disabled parking space so she could drop her off and collect her each day.  The school fully supported the request and Claire put it to the council with plenty of notice so it was ready for the new school year. Now, six months after she made her request, Claire has resorted to painting the space herself when the council failed to come through.

Claire says: “I had been asking and asking over the summer but nothing had been done.  It was my daughter’s first day at school and it was a big day for both of us.  Because the disabled space hadn’t been provided in time I had to drop her off with another parent at the bottom of the hill and couldn’t see her in, even though I wanted to.”

Do It Yourself

When Claire chased the council up again, they advised her that a date hadn’t been set yet and she decided to take matter into her own hands.  With the help of her friends and daughter, she went up to the school and painted it herself in yellow and pink (as chosen by Maisie!)

Claire comments: “People keep telling me I should invoice the council.  It took us 40 minutes laughing around to paint the lines which the council couldn’t do in six months.”

The school fully supported the space and said the council came out to mark it up but never got round to applying the paint.

A spokesman for Leicestershire County Council said: “We would like to apologise for the delay in painting this disabled bay and the inconvenience that has caused Claire and Maisie during the first weeks of the school term.”
