Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Christmas Wish Comes True

An American boy with a rare genetic disorder has asked Santa for a wheelchair accessible vehicle for Christmas. Eight year old Giovanni Hamilton didn’t ask for toys or computer games, but instead wished for the van which will change his life.

Giovanni has a rare genetic disorder called Schwartz-Jampel Syndrome which has left him wheelchair-bound. The disorder can cause muscle weakness and stiffness, abnormal bone development and growth delays.

Desperately in need

After Giovanni developed carpel tunnel in his wrists he required an electric wheelchair to get around. But because of its 300lb weight the family also desperately needed a wheelchair accessible vehicle to make the regular four hour trips to Giovanni’s hospital appointments.

His mum Shannon said: “Giovanni has the best doctors in the world, but unfortunately we live four hours from the hospital. It is a four hour drive each way to and from the hospital. Money is tight, but it is totally worth the amazing care he receives.

“Because Schwartz Jampel Syndrome is so rare, no one in our area is comfortable treating him. There are only about 30-40 people in the world with the disorder.”

Fundraising

Friends and family set up a Go Fund Me page asking for donations towards the extra special Christmas present. And thanks to the kindness of strangers Giovanni’s wish has been granted! Over $23000 was donated through the fundraising site and Giovanni will get his car in time for Christmas.

Shannon added: “Thanks to you all, the fundraising for Giovanni’s wheelchair accessible van is complete and his Christmas wish is coming true!”
