For over 40 years the Disabled Motorists Federation (DMF), a registered charity, has been offering assistance and advice to disabled people all over the country in relation to their mobility vehicles requirements.

The DMF’s work over recent years has focused on building key relationships with charitable organisations which represent the needs of disabled people and their carers. The Federation also works with central and local Government bodies, who often seek advice on issues relating to transport for people living with disability, including options involving their own mobility vehicles.

Mobility Vehicles Advice

The Disabled Motorists Federation’s main focus is around providing information on different types of mobility vehicles and on helping advise disabled drivers on a wide range of motoring issues. Today’s options range from vehicle adaptations, such as steering aids or push-pull hand controls right through to fully wheelchair accessible drive-from-wheelchair vehicles, such as the Peugeot Impulse, from Allied Mobility.

Nowadays the DMF also helps to inform disabled people on relevant government policies, disabled travel, disabled holidays, blue badge schemes and concessions and grants available.

Funding Quest

Unfortunately, despite numerous attempts to seek appropriate development grants for the enlargement of their membership, the Disabled Motorists Federation has failed to qualify for any funding and remains staffed entirely by volunteers. Currently the only funds coming in to the organisation are from membership fees and the DMF are finding it difficult to promote their service to those who really need it.

Allied Mobility actively supports the DMF and their members through their Partner Plan scheme, which allows Allied and disabled charities to work together to support disabled people, especially wheelchair users.

Peter Lynne, Vice President of the DMF, says: “Above all, the Disabled Motorists Federation’s aim is to create a society which is as inclusive and equal as possible for disabled people as that enjoyed by non-disabled members of the population.
