To celebrate World Tourism Day, we’ve put together a list of some of the best wheelchair accessible cities in Europe to help you plan your next getaway.
Top Wheelchair Accessible Cities
Paris
As this year’s host city of the Paralympics, Paris is largely wheelchair accessible. As well as having one of Europe’s most disabled-friendly airports, disabled people are also entitled to free admission to some of Paris’ top attractions such as the Louvre and Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
Although the metro isn’t wheelchair accessible, public transport is favoured well amongst wheelchair users with buses and RER trains offering accessible ways to travel. If you’d rather take a cab, wheelchair accessible taxis are also relatively easy to book.
So, whether you’re interested in the art, the croissants or the fashion, Paris offers something for everyone.
Amsterdam
If you’re after a city break that combines a laid-back atmosphere with gorgeous architecture and some of the world’s best museums, then Amsterdam is the weekend escape for you!
As a well-connected city, Amsterdam’s public transport is reliable and accessible. Through the handy GVB Travel App, you can view and plan accessible journeys with the app’s Virtual Stop Assistance which will assess the stops you want to use and score them from good to inaccessible based on your individual needs.
And with the city’s love for cycling, there are plenty curbed ramps and smooth pavements, making exploring Amsterdam by wheelchair a stress-free experience.
Vienna
Home to three opera houses, a plethora of music halls and some of the most famous music composers in the world, Vienna is largely considered the classical music capital of Europe.
Wheelchair users can enjoy the city’s rich music history by visiting one of the many accessible museums such as Haus Der Musik, an interactive museum of music and sound or by catching a show at one of the city’s opera houses.
Like most cities in Europe, people with disabilities can enjoy discounted or free admission to many of Vienna’s attractions and museums.
Getting around the city is also a breeze with largely smooth and flat pavements, dropped curbs, pedestrian crossings and accessible public transport links. So, if music and history is your thing, Vienna may be the ideal accessible city break for you.
Berlin
As one of the most disabled friendly cities in Europe, in many ways Berlin sets the European standard for accessibility.
That means most public transport is accessible with the exception of the 218 excursion route as it is frequently operated by vintage buses and the F24 ferry as it is a rowing boat.
And with easily rollable streets, grabbing some currywurst, learning about the city’s rich history at museums and sites such as the German Reichstag and the Brandenburg Gate or hitting the clubbing scene is all relatively easy to do by wheelchair.
London
A staycation might be the answer if you want a city-break without the stress of flying and with the UK’s capital bursting with accessible things to do, it’s a popular tourist destination for a reason.
From West End shows to royal palaces, historic museums to tranquil gardens, London offers a little bit of everything, and with the majority of the city’s sites and attractions being accessible, London is a great place for a fun getaway.
Getting around the historic city is also simple with all of London’s public transport offering accessibility features. However, do plan ahead with the free London travel map as not all underground stops are wheelchair accessible.
