Keep the Road Ahead Clear: Check your Wipers!

Often overlooked, your wheelchair accessible vehicle’s (WAV) wiper blades play a huge part in keeping you safe on the road. On average, 20% of collisions are due to poor visibility, as such, it is important to look after the health of your windscreen wipers and carry out regular safety checks to ensure your blades keep the road ahead clear and visible.

Top Tips to Make Your Wiper Blades Last Longer

  • Keep your screen wash topped up: Using your wipers on a dry windscreen will cause friction that will result in your wiper blades wearing down quicker over time. Avoid this by keeping your windscreen fluid topped up.
  • Wipe your windscreen wipers: It’s a good idea to give your wiper blades a clean with a damp cloth every now and then to remove any dirt as this can prolong the life of your wipers.
  • Park your WAV in the shade: Regardless of weather, parking your wheelchair accessible vehicle in the shade is a great way to protect your windscreen wipers. This is because sunlight can deteriorate the rubber material that makes your wipers efficient in cleaning your windscreen. If your wipers become hardened from too much sun exposure, try softening them with water and vinegar.

What to Look for When Checking Your Blades

On average wiper blades need replaced every six to twelve months as the rubber can degrade over time due to hot weather and general wear and tear. Your wiper blades will need replaced if they show any of the following:

  • Cracked or dry rubber on the blades.
  • A misshapen or stiff blade.
  • Squeaking or juddering from the blade when used.
  • Smearing on the windscreen from the wiper when used.
