Heart Scotland radio presenter, Grado and spinal chord injury charity, Spinal Injuries Scotland (SIS), recently embarked on a gruelling five-day handcycle from Aberdeen to Glasgow in aid of Heart Radio’s official charity, Make Some Noise.
Grado was joined on the 75-100 km a day quest, dubbed Granite to Glasgow Handcycle Challenge by Joanna Martin, SIS Ambassador and Graham Stewart, SIS Peer Support Advisor.

To help, we donated one of our most popular wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs), Ford Tourneo Independence™ Twin for the trip to ensure wheelchair users, Joanna and Graham, could travel in the safety and comfort of their wheelchairs.
With ample space for both wheelchairs, Independence™ comes with a lightweight ramp and an electric-assist winch to ensure easy WAV entry. Joanna and Graham’s wheelchairs were also secured using front and rear wheelchair restraints to make the journey a safe and comfortable one.
Brimming with Ford’s Titanium spec, Independence™ also comes with fantastic OEM features including a 13” touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity so the team could stay motivated for the challenge ahead by listening to all their favourite tunes.

Granite to Glasgow Handcycle Challenge
The trio cycled over 400 kilometres all the way from Aberdeen to Glasgow on handbikes, which are specially designed bicycles that allow the user to cycle using their arms, rather than their legs.
For Grado, the feat was something he relished. He says:
“I wanted to do something that would push me physically and mentally to my absolute limit. When Spinal Injuries Scotland first introduced me to a handbike, I knew it was going to be the start of a special journey!”
The route, which covered multiple terrains fell over five days:
Day 1: Aberdeen – Montrose (88km)
Day 2: Montrose – Perth (92km)
Day 3: Perth – Kirkcaldy (77km)
Day 4: Kirkcaldy – Edinburgh – Falkirk (102km)
Day 5: Falkirk – Heart HQ in Glasgow (44km)

Spinal Injuries Scotland is just one of the incredible charities supported by Make Some Noise. A small but vital Scottish charity, SIS offer advice, support and an understanding community for those impacted by spinal chord injury.
