Dial-a-Ride Crew Save Woman’s Life

Joan Duckworth, 75, of West Shore Park, Walney, was suffering from hypothermia when Larry McGlinchey, 56, of Manchester Street, Barrow, from the Dial-A-Ride taxi service for the disabled, raised the alarm.

The second driver on the scene, George Newell, 34, of Earle Street, Barrow, peered through her windows after she failed to appear for her weekly trip to the hairdressers.

When he saw the widow lying on the floor he called an ambulance and smashed a bedroom window to get into the house.

Mrs Duckworth said: “I was going in the living room, I wasn’t feeling so good and I fell over.

“I must have lost consciousness because I was talking in riddles to myself.”

Mrs Duckworth was kept in Furness General Hospital for two weeks following her ordeal.

During her stay she was visited by Mr Newell and Mr McGlinchey, both Dial-A-Ride drivers of five years’ experience.
