As a nurse and case manager for a spinal injury specialist company, Helen works with a range of clients, many of whom have recently become wheelchair users. She got in touch with Allied Mobility Hire to enquire about our range of specialist wheelchair accessible vehicles to rent.
What is Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Hire?
A wheelchair accessible vehicle, or WAV, is a car that has been converted by mobility experts to include a foldable ramp which allows a disabled passenger to enter the vehicle and travel in their wheelchair. WAVs can then be rented from Allied Mobility Hire for short or long periods of time, depending on the needs and rehabilitation period of a client.
Why did Helen Get in Touch?
During her client’s recovery, finding accessible travel for attending hospital appointments was proving to be a challenge. From long waits for hospital transport to frustratingly inaccessible taxis, Helen started looking for a new solution that would allow her client to hire a vehicle with maximum accessibility.
Helen says: “There is nothing worse than seeing your client burst into tears when a taxi arrives which says that it’s wheelchair accessible and they cannot get into it.”
Expert Advice from Allied Mobility Hire
The requirement for reliable accessible travel led to Helen finding Allied Mobility Hire. She got in touch with mobility advisor, Janet, who guided her through the process. Janet introduced Helen to the range of vehicles available and offered expert advice so she could select the right WAV for her client’s needs.
Helen recalls: “Janet helped with being realistic about the vehicles which my client could access.”
Accessible Independence
Helen decided the spacious Ford Tourneo Custom Independence™ would suit her client’s needs perfectly. She reports that Independence™ certainly didn’t disappoint, especially when it came to its excellent accessibility and roomy interior. From its lightweight, EasyFold™ ramp that made it simple and easy for her client to enter in their wheelchair, to its comfortable interior that ensured a smooth journey from beginning to end. What’s more, the flexibility of the layout for additional passengers and extra space inside Independence™ for equipment made it perfect.
Helen explains: “People just think about the wheelchair going in, however if the client wants to go on holiday they require all the equipment, bags etc to go with them, so they need the space.”
