Why Cardiff?

Cardiff is the largest city in Wales and was proclaimed as the capital in 1955.  The city is becoming a popular tourist destination – it was ranked 6th in the world in the National Geographic’s ‘Alternative Destinations’ list. As a popular city, Cardiff city council have been working to make it more accessible.

How Accessible is Cardiff?

All of Cardiff’s Park & Ride buses have lowered floors and assistance for disabled passengers, making travel into the city more comfortable from surrounding areas.  If visitors would prefer to drive into the city, there are plenty disabled parking bays, with misuse being monitored.  480 taxis, such as the Ford ProCab, in Cardiff are suitable to carry wheelchair passengers.

Accessible Attractions

  • Cardiff Castle

Wheelchair users can access a lot of this attraction, with the exception of the Castle Apartments and the Norman Keep, due to the large number of steps.  Available sections include the Interpretation Centre, the Education Centre and the Undercroft.  Audio guides and multi-media British Sign Language (BSL) guides are available.

  • New Theatre

With accessible parking, level access, pre-bookable wheelchair spaces and audio descriptions available, this theatre is a great choice for wheelchair users. Assistance dogs are welcome and some performances offer BSL interpreters.  There are also price reductions for disabled visitors and carers on some performances.

  • St David’s Dewi Sant Shopping Centre

With a host of accessibility features including spacious parking, Shopmobility, audio and braille descriptions in lifts and changing places, St David’s is perfect for a bit of retail therapy!
