As the UK’s leading wheelchair accessible vehicle manufacturer, we’re passionate about making life more accessible – whether through our range of wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs) or by sharing tools that empower disabled people to live more independently and confidently.
Navigating public spaces, events and venues can be challenging for disabled people and their carers, especially when access needs aren’t immediately visible or understood. That’s where the Access Card comes in, translating a person’s access requirements into easy to recognise symbols, helping venues and service providers offer the right support without lengthy explanations.
What is the Access Card?
The Access Card is a photo ID card that communicates your access needs using a set of symbols. These symbols represent barriers you face – such as difficulty standing, queuing or needing level access – and the reasonable adjustments you might require.
It’s recognised at thousands of venues across the UK and beyond, including theme parks, theatres, sports stadiums and even ticket selling platforms like Ticketmaster. It’s also integrated with online systems to unlock accessible booking options.
How Does it Work?
Each Access Card displays up to nine symbols, each representing a specific access need:
-
- Standing and Queuing – for those who can’t stand or wait in lines.
- Level Access – for wheelchair users or those needing step-free access.
- Distance – for people who struggle with walking long distances.
- Urgent Toilet Needs – for those with continence issues.
- Essential Companions – for individuals who need support from another person.
- Visual Information – for those who need clear written or visual instructions like large prints and diagrams, etc.
- Audible Information – for individuals who need spoken instructions or audio support (ideal for visually impaired users).
- Assistance Dog – confirms that an assistance dog will accompany the cardholder.
- Miscellaneous – for other needs not represented by the standard symbols, such as sensory considerations or medical equipment.
These symbols help staff understand your needs quickly and respectfully, reducing stress and improving your experience.
