Improving your fuel consumption when driving will benefit the environment and your wallet. So, take this Energy Saving Week to reflect on some of the ways you can make driving your wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) more energy efficient.
Driving Habits
How you drive your wheelchair adapted car can have an impact on how much fuel you use and the overall health of your vehicle. Try incorporating these habits into your driving style to make your fuel go further:
Avoid idling
Whenever you stop your accessible vehicle for a longer period of time, remember to switch off the engine as vehicle idling causes air and noise pollution.
As well as being detrimental to the environment and public health, idling uses more fuel and may be costly in the long run as excessive idling can lead to engine damage.
Accelerate and decelerate smoothly
You can reduce vehicle wear and tear and save significant energy by slowly accelerating and gently braking.
To help you maintain a steady speed that allows for gentle braking, anticipate the road conditions ahead. If your mobility WAV comes with cruise control, it is a good idea to use this, when safe to do so, to help maintain a steady speed.
Change gears
If you drive a manual wheelchair disability car, shifting to a higher gear as soon as your vehicle allows will keep the engine speed low and ensure your fuel consumption is as efficient as possible.
Check tyre pressure
Under-inflated tires force your engine to work harder and burn more fuel. So, it is important to inflate your tires when necessary.
You can find the correct tyre pressure for your Allied Mobility new or used WAV by checking the user manual or the sticker on the driver’s side door.

If you can’t get a home chargepoint, the Motability Scheme will give you a subscription to the BP pulse network which has over 9,000 public chargepoints, many of which are either free or offer better charging rates.
Motability WAV customers will also gain access to a Motability Go Charge card giving you access to over 65,000 public chargepoints.
