Driving Habits For a Healthy Battery
Use Your WAV in Cold Weather
If you don’t use your WAV frequently in the colder months, you run the risk of a flat battery. This is because colder weather makes it harder for your battery to supply the necessary power to start your engine.
To ensure your battery stays charged and healthy, try to take your wheelchair access car on a drive as often as you can. If most of your journeys are short, your battery may struggle to obtain a full charge, to help combat this, go on a longer drive when possible.
Avoid Extreme Heat
While cold weather can cause battery trouble, hot weather can also prove troublesome for your battery’s long-term lifespan. Warm temperatures can evaporate your battery’s internal fluid faster resulting in overcharging, corrosion and the premature replacement of your WAV battery.
Turn Off Electronics
The electronics in your wheelchair accessible car are powered by your WAV’s battery. To prevent being stuck at the roadside, remember to turn off the following when the engine isn’t on:
- Lights (including your headlights!)
- Radio
- Electric-assist winch (turn this off after each use)
- Aircon
Electric Disability Cars
If you have an electric WAV, it’s best practice to follow all of the battery health saving tips above. However, as electric mobility cars are powered by an electric motor instead of an internal combustion engine, there are some additional things to consider when it comes to battery care:
- Keep your eWAV charged between 20% and 80% to improve overall battery life – Regularly charging to 100% or frequently dropping to a low level of charge puts stress on your battery, wearing it down faster.
- Avoid frequently fast charging – Fast chargers charge your vehicle faster, but they also generate more heat which can place greater stress on your battery. To prevent overheating and damage, try to use daily slow charging when possible.
