Martin’s Dream™️ Wheelchair Driving Mobility Car

Last month we caught up with one of our customers from Bedford, Dr. Martin Lowe, about his new wheelchair driving mobility car. Martin is a retired environmental scientist and has been married for 45 years. As an active couple who enjoy going out to the theatre and to comedy shows a few times a week, their previous car, a Ford Kuga, meant his wife would have to lift the wheelchair in and out of the car.

Martin decided his wife needed a break and started looking for a wheelchair accessible vehicle. Watch the video or read on to find out more about Martin’s Dream™️ mobility car.

Wheelchair Driving Mobility Cars

As Martin drives, when he was looking for a new WAV it came down to two options – a drive from wheelchair or an internal transfer vehicle. With our drive-from WAVs, the standard driver’s seat is removed to allow you to drive from the comfort of your own wheelchair or powerchair. Internal transfers, on the other hand, have space in the rear to park your wheelchair and transfer over to either the driver’s seat or you can choose to sit as a passenger. After speaking to an Allied Mobility advisor, Martin decided the Internal transfer Ford Dream™️ was the best option for him and his wife.

Ford Dream™️

Having previously driven a Ford, Martin chose the Ford Tourneo Custom Dream™️ because he liked the controls and comfort. Dream™️ is based on the popular Ford Tourneo Custom and is packed full of the latest technology, including an 8” colour touch screen, DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity. There is plenty of space to transfer to the front seat and the 6-way adjustable seat can help you find the most comfortable position when you are driving.

Martin was especially impressed with the reverse camera on the Ford Dream™️which helps him reverse from his driveway to the busy road, which is always full of vehicles.

About Allied Mobility

Through Motability, Martin knew that Allied Mobility was the leading supplier of WAVs in the UK and was able to learn more about the brand in the Disabled Drivers Association magazine. When he phoned to enquire about the Dream™️, an Allied Mobility advisor scheduled a free home demonstration and test drive for him.

Martin explained, “The demonstrator showed us how to operate the tailgate and I went for a test drive and I really liked the vehicle”. He was also delighted to hear that Allied Mobility had a Dream™️ in stock that could be available in a short period of time, and he would not have to join a waiting list. Very soon after, Martin was able to start driving his new Ford Dream™️ with his wife, ready to return to theatre evenings and comedy shows near them once again.

How to Choose the Right WAV

When finding the right WAV for you, Martin advises that “You have to decide if you want to drive the WAV, as most are passenger access only. If you want to drive, you have the choice of a drive-from vehicle or an internal transfer.” Martin and his wife love the flexibility that the internal transfer vehicle offers, allowing them both to drive the vehicle. He’s been very pleased with the service from Allied Mobility and is always able to contact Allied if he needs to.
