Sophia’s First Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle

Based in Downpatrick in Northern Ireland, 12-year-old Sophia Magee lives with her mum Emma and 9-year-old sister Zara. Born with Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CDLS), Sophia is a wheelchair user. Having recently taken delivery of their first ever wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV), Peugeot Horizon™, we sat down with Sophia’s mum to find out how the family are getting on with their new vehicle and why they chose Horizon™ as Sophia’s first WAV.

Sourcing Sophia’s First WAV

Following some online research, Emma found our website and decided to give one of our friendly mobility advisors a call to explain Sophia’s needs:

“The main thing for me was that we wanted Sophia sitting up in the middle with her sister in the second row.”

From listening to the family’s wants and needs, Sophia’s mobility advisor suggested Horizon™ may be the best fit and passed their details onto their dedicated mobility consultant, Ryan, to arrange a free, no-obligation home demonstration.

Why Have a Home Demonstration?

A home demonstration is the best way to see if the vehicle you’re most interested in, truly is to your liking and best for the wheelchair user. Your mobility consultant will bring the vehicle to your home, demonstrate the accessibility features and answer any of your WAV related questions.

Emma tells us that the home demonstration was beneficial in deciding Horizon was the right WAV for Sophia, “As soon as Horizon™ arrived and we tried it out, it was definitely what fitted our needs.”

Benefits of a WAV

Discussing how much Sophia’s new WAV has impacted the family’s daily life, Emma explains how much simpler it is to travel with Sophia safely and comfortably secured in her wheelchair rather than having to help her transfer in and out of a passenger seat:

“It makes life so much easier and it’s so much more comfortable for her.”

Stand out Features

As well as a range of fantastic accessible features, Horizon™ offers style and comfort for wheelchair users and able-bodied passengers alike. Sharing her favourite features, Emma tells us,

“It’s a really good, really lovely car, but my favourite feature is the fact that it has a heated steering wheel. As soon as I get in and press that button, I can just feel the warmth in my hands – it just makes my day!”

Packed with impressive accessibility features, all of Allied Mobility’s wheelchair accessible vehicles come with an easy-use, lightweight ramp and an electric-assist winch to help guide the wheelchair user in and out of the vehicle. Offering a range of mobility cars with different seating layouts, we can help find the perfect WAV for you and your family.

Ease from Order to Delivery

On delivery day, the family were provided with another full demonstration of the vehicle’s accessibility features.

Sharing her thoughts on the delivery experience, Emma notes, “It was really helpful because Allied Mobility took away our old Mobility Scheme car. So, we really didn’t have to do anything. They just came to the house, delivered it and took everything else away.”

She concludes, “From the minute I phoned Allied Mobility, they were extremely helpful, very friendly and very easy to chat to.”
