Q. What is a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV)?
A. It’s a vehicle that’s been converted by mobility experts to allow a disabled passenger to travel in their wheelchair. The vehicle floor is lowered and a foldable ramp or an electrically-powered lift is fitted to the vehicle. This allows the wheelchair user to enter via the rear or side of the car.

Q. What is the Motability Scheme?
A. The Motability Scheme leases cars, wheelchair accessible vehicles and mobility scooters to over 600,00 people with disabilities. Standard cars are provided on a three year lease, wheelchair accessible vehicles are five years. Servicing, tyres and even insurance is included.
Q. Who is eligible to join the Scheme?
A. To join the Motability Scheme you need to be a current recipient of one of the following: Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA), the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS) or the Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP).

Q. What is an Advance Payment?
A. If you choose to lease your car from Motability, you’ll need to make a one off, up-front payment to your vehicle supplier before delivery of your WAV. Thereafter, your monthly mobility allowance is paid directly to Motability by the Department for Work and Pension or Veterans UK.
Q. What if I can’t afford the Advance Payment?
A. Last year alone, Motability provided charitable grants to 8,500 Scheme customers to help make a wheelchair accessible vehicle an affordable option for them. Before applying for a grant, however, you could consider Motability’s Nearly New Scheme where you can find a selection of quality used Motability cars at a cheaper price than a new vehicle.
Q. What if I don’t qualify for the Motability Scheme?
A. You can purchase a brand new wheelchair vehicle outright or, alternatively, Allied Mobility offers a brilliant selection of RAC Approved used wheelchair accessible vehicles to suit a variety of budgets. Remember, you may also qualify for VAT exemption on your purchase.
