Ways to Pay for Your WAV | Allied Mobility

Whether it’s leasing a new or nearly new vehicle through the Motability Scheme, buying a new or second-hand accessible car outright or hiring for short or long-term, we’ve explained some of the ways to pay for your wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV), and what’s included, below!

Option One: Lease Your WAV with the Motability Scheme

If you’re in receipt of the higher rate mobility part of Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP) (known as Child/ Adult Disability Payment if you live in Scotland), Armed Forces Independence Payment or War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement, you can apply to join the Motability Scheme where your allowance will be exchanged and used towards the cost of leasing your own car. To make things easier for you, Motability receives this allowance directly from your provider.

But what about the Advance Payment?

In addition to your monthly payments to Motability, in order to lease a WAV, you must make a one-off, upfront payment directly to your WAV converter. This is called an Advance Payment (AP). You’ll find that a WAV AP can be slightly higher than a standard car because of the many stages involved in its conversion. You can watch how we make our vehicles below.

If you struggle to afford the Advance Payment, you may be entitled to a grant from the Motability Foundations WAV Grant Programme. Through this programme you can obtain financial help to cover the cost of your AP or for additional adaptations you need.

Who can apply for the WAV Grant Programme?

Those eligible for a WAV Grant are disabled people using a wheelchair who need help with funding their disability vehicle or are currently on the Motability Scheme but their lease is ending and cannot afford their next lease.

All grant applications are means-tested with Motability Scheme taking into consideration your financial situation when deciding on your grant award amount. This ensures that those most in need of financial help are supported and as many people can benefit from the scheme as possible.

Option 2: Buy Your WAV
