Finding a spacious, practical and stylish wheelchair accessible vehicle was easy for Harry and Angela Elvin from North Shields, near Newcastle, thanks to Allied Mobility.
Mr Elvin uses an electric wheelchair and experienced problems with accessibility in his previous car. Both he and his wife enjoy regular trips to Wales and due to his power chair and luggage they decided they needed a more spacious accessible vehicle.
Mr Elvin heard of Allied Mobility through the Motability Cars Scheme. After looking at Allied’s range of wheelchair accessible vehicles Mr and Mrs Elvin decided they wanted a home demonstration of the Peugeot Expert Independence.

Harry explained: “We live in quite an isolated place so we would be lost without a car. We enjoy taking regular trips to Wales which is quite a distance from North Shields. One of the main reasons we chose the Peugeot Independence over other wheelchair access vehiclesis the fact that my electric chair takes up a good deal of space so we needed a roomier vehicle.”
The Independence is based on the Peugeot Expert Tepee. These adaptable and spacious wheelchair accessible vehicles provides optimum accessibility with a lowered floor, lowering air suspension and EasyFold™ wheelchair ramp. It can also accommodate up to six seated passengers, in addition to the driver.
The vehicle is available in a choice of models to meet a range of different needs from extra seating layouts to increased headroom.
Joy to Drive
“To load my chair into the vehicle is very straightforward, it makes taking the car out so easy. The Independence is a joy to drive, my wife especially likes that she can adjust the height of the steering wheel which makes driving much more comfortable. Even though the Independence is quite a large vehicle it’s still easy to manoeuvre and park.
“The features of the vehicle are excellent, larger cars can be hard to heat up but the Independence has heaters in the rear of the vehicle and this has made trips out much more enjoyable. I also like the fact that the tailgate provides shelter when I am driving my electric chair into the car.”
Allied Mobility is the UK’s leading specialist in wheelchair accessible vehicles and Harry and Angela were very happy with the service they received. Harry commented: “Our mobility advisor, Neil, was fantastic! He was very helpful and had the patience of a saint when it came to demonstrating the vehicle, he even came back to go through it all again when the car was delivered.”
The Peugeot Independence is available to buy or rent or through the Motability Cars Scheme, with Advance Payments starting from £1,695. This impressive MPV offers the ideal solution for small groups or large families looking for a spacious and practical wheelchair accessible vehicle.
