Which Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle is Best?

For more than 30 years, Allied Mobility has designed and engineered wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs) in the UK. Our mobility specialists help thousands of customers every year find the best WAV for their lifestyle, wheelchair type and travel needs.

What is a WAV?

A WAV is a specially converted vehicle that allows wheelchair users to remain in their wheelchair during road travel thanks to accessibility features such as:

  • Electric-assist winch
  • Fitted lightweight ramp
  • Lowered floor for improved headroom and lower ramp gradient

Converted from Ford, Peugeot, Renault, Vauxhall, Citroen and Volkswagen base models, our WAVs are packed full of brilliant features such as Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto, colour reversing camera, parking sensors and a heated steering wheel depending on the make and model of your chosen mobility car.

Which WAV is Best?

We offer a wide range of mobility cars. The best WAV for you will depend on factors such as:

  • The size of your wheelchair or powerchair
  • How many people you would like to travel with
  • Your storage requirements for luggage and/ or medical equipment

Whether you’re looking for a compact wheelchair accessible vehicle, a spacious wheelchair access family car, a drive from wheelchair vehicle or even a fully electric WAV, our disability cars are designed and engineered onsite by our team of industry experts to meet a wide variety of mobility needs.

To help you find the right fit, our WAVs are categorised into three sizes:

  • Small WAVs
  • Medium-Small WAVs
  • Medium-Large WAVs

Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Sizes Explained

Small WAVs These vehicles are more compact, ideal for city driving and smaller families or groups.
Medium-Small WAVs A medium-small wheelchair access vehicle offers extra seating, headroom and space. Perfect for those who like a spacious, compact vehicle.
Medium-Large WAVs Medium-large WAVs are best for larger wheelchairs/ powerchairs, larger families or groups and those requiring extra room for luggage and equipment.

Which Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles are Available in 2026?

Allied Mobility offer the largest range of WAVs in the UK. As one of the only suppliers to design and engineer all our own WAVs, we are continuously looking at ways to enhance our WAV range to offer wheelchair users greater comfort, access and choice.

What’s the Difference Between WAVs and Drive-From WAVs?

Passenger WAVs, often just called WAVs, are made so wheelchair users can travel in their wheelchair in the second or third row of the vehicle. If you are looking for a car that you can drive from your wheelchair, or you would like to transfer from your wheelchair into the driver seat or upfront passenger seat, then our AlliedGo™ range may have the WAV for you!

In every Allied Mobility drive-from WAV (DFW) and internal transfer IT WAV, you can expect:

  • Automatic tailgate and wheelchair ramp
  • One-touch key fob
  • If you opt for an Internal Transfer WAV, you will benefit from a specialised six-way Turny transfer seat.
