Who we are:

As of the 20th October 2011 Shine became the new name for the Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (ASBAH).

Shine is a registered charity, originally formed in 1966, to help families and individuals affected by disabilities and life challenges associated with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

Working together throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland, we strive to overcome challenges and achieve the best for you and your family.

How many people in the UK use the services provided by Shine?

Today, Shine is a community of 75,000 individuals, families, friends, and professionals, sharing achievements, challenges and information on living with hydrocephalus, or spina bifida, and related issues.

What are your main activities as a charity?

We provide specialist support from before birth and throughout the life of anyone living with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus, as well as to parents, families, carers and professional health and social care staff.

We work on a national level to provide these services through the following specialist teams:

• Support and Development Team
• Health Development Team
• Education Advisory Services

Through our regional structure these teams are accessible in your area and once contacted we will do everything possible to ensure that you receive all the information and support you need.

And what are your main sources of income?

Shine relies on voluntary contributions to the charity in order to carry out the range of services. We receive grants from a wide range of Trusts and we work with various organisations, from small to medium enterprises, right up to major leading companies who support us through annual donations.

Donations from individuals are vital in supporting the work we do, whether it be regular giving via ‘pay as you earn’ schemes, buying a balloon in our virtual balloon race, active fundraising or making a one off donation.
