Getting out and about as a wheelchair or powerchair user, is made simple with a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV).

Sharing her experience of finding her first WAV with Allied Mobility, Arlene Hutchinson, from Pontyclun in Wales, tells us the difference her Peugeot Horizon™ has made to her life.
Why Go for a WAV?
There are many reasons to opt for a wheelchair accessible vehicle. For some people, disassembling and reassembling their wheelchair like they would have to do in a standard car with adaptations isn’t an option. However, with a WAV, their wheelchair can be safely secured in the dedicated wheelchair travelling position while they either travel or drive directly from it or transfer to a fixed passenger or six-way driving seat.
For Arlene, travelling as a passenger from the comfort of her powerchair makes life for her and her carer so much easier.
“I did have a car previously, but it belonged to my carer and she had to pick me up and get me into the car which wasn’t very easy to do”, she explains.

Looking for a better way to travel, that wouldn’t be so physically straining for her and her carer, Arlene began to look at WAVs online.

A Free Home Demonstration

“Once I had the vehicle you couldn’t stop me! I can drive my powerchair into the WAV really comfortably and then I can bring myself back out. I’ve had my carers take me uptown, take me shopping, take me down to Barry, take me to Porthcawl. So, everything has worked out exceptionally well. I think the world of it.”
Delighted with how easy it is to roll into her disability car and go, Arlene concludes,
“Whoever wants one of these cars should go for it because it’s the best thing that they could do in their life.”
