Packed with accessibility features, each of our passenger wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs) come with a lightweight ramp, privacy glass and an electric-assist winch to help make entry and exit of the vehicle easier, safer and more comfortable for the wheelchair user. Christine Heywood and her husband, Chris, from Bridlington can testify to the difference a WAV can make to everyday life.
Having recently made the switch from a standard car to a wheelchair accessible car; we caught up with the couple to find out how they’re getting on with their brand-new Peugeot Horizon™ WAV.
Why Switch to a WAV?
Prior to Horizon™ the couple travelled in a standard vehicle fit with a personal transfer hoist. This enabled Christine to transfer from her wheelchair into the front seat of the car while she stored her wheelchair in the boot.
However, Chris tells us, “When Christine’s mobility needs changed, she required a bigger wheelchair that would not fit into a conventional car boot. So, we needed to start looking at WAVs.”
Process of Finding a WAV
After spotting Peugeot Horizon™ on the Motability Scheme’s website, Christine and Chris called one of our mobility advisors to express their interest. The pair were then put in touch with their dedicated mobility consultant.
“The call with our mobility consultant was a very helpful, comprehensive and reassuring experience. He was first interested in ensuring that our needs were meet with the most appropriate vehicle,” Chris shares.
Happy that Horizon™ fit the couple’s needs on paper, their mobility consultant brought the car out for a home demonstration to confirm this was the vehicle for them.
Benefits of a Home Demonstration
Speaking about the value of his free, no-obligation, home demonstration, Chris tells us, “It was an essential part of the process to ensure that Christine and her wheelchair fit correctly and that she was happy with her travelling position.”
He continues, “All aspects of the vehicle and its fittings were fully explained and demonstrated with time to ask questions.”
Order and Delivery
If you decide on a WAV, your mobility consultant can help you complete all the necessary paperwork to finalise your order.
Describing the process of ordering the vehicle, Chris tells us that it was “very simple and straight forward.”
And when delivery day came, Allied Mobility’s delivery specialist walked the couple through all their WAV’s accessibility features once more to make certain they were confident using their new vehicle. He even told them about HomeStay Mobile Servicing* which is exclusively available with Allied Mobility wheelchair accessible vehicles. A HomeStay vehicle service means the couple don’t have to visit their local service centre to have their WAV serviced when the time comes, instead, an Allied Mobility technician will complete the service right outside their front door.
Horizon’s™ Best Bits
Chris tells us that switching to a WAV has allowed the couple to maintain their ability to get out and about, something that would not have been possible had they stuck to a standard car. He also highlights that what they have gained in accessibility with Horizon™, they have not lost in specification:
“The ease of use makes the WAV a very good solution for our needs. We have not lost out in any way by moving to this type of vehicle. All the modern up to date features are incorporated into this WAV.”
Indeed, based on the Peugeot Rifter Allure, Horizon™ comes with an impressive specification including a 10″ colour touch screen with a 180°colour reversing camera, Mirror Screen®, Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto.
Thinking of Switching to a WAV?
If you’re also thinking about making the move to a WAV, Chris has some simple advice:
“If you’re thinking of switching to a WAV, I can’t recommend Allied Mobility highly enough. At every stage of the process, they have put our needs first and have taken every effort to ensure we have our transport needs met.”
