What is a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle?
Different to a standard car with adaptions, an Allied Mobility WAV offers a faster, easier and oftentimes safer travelling experience for disabled people.
Designed for wheelchair users, each of our accessible vehicles are equipped with a built-in lightweight ramp at the rear which makes entry and exit of the vehicle quick and effortless, even when the weather isn’t on your side!
Gone are the days of dismantling your wheelchair or using a hoist and roof box before setting off. With a WAV, you can remain comfortably seated in your wheelchair throughout your entire journey, no transfers, no fuss.
Paying for a WAV
Whether it’s leasing a new or nearly new vehicle through the Motability Scheme, buying a new or second-hand accessible car outright or hiring for short or long-term, there are lots of ways to take ownership of a WAV. Don’t worry if you can’t decide on the best payment option for you and your family, our friendly expert mobility advisors can explain the advantages of each.
Motability Scheme
If you are a Motability Scheme customer, you can exchange your higher rate mobility allowance and use it towards the cost of leasing your own wheelchair accessible car.
In addition to your monthly payments to the Motability Scheme, in order to lease a WAV, you must make a one-off, upfront payment directly to your WAV converter. This is called an Advance Payment (AP). You’ll find that a WAV AP can be slightly higher than a standard car because of the many stages involved in its conversion.
Benefits of leasing with the Motability Scheme are:
- Insurance cover for up to three interchangeable drivers.
- RAC Motability Assist breakdown cover.
- Mobile Vehicle Servicing* and MOT.
*Mobile servicing available on Peugeot (excluding eHorizon™), Vauxhall, Citroën and Ford WAVs on the Motability Scheme. For other manufacturers we’ll arrange your vehicle service with your local garage.
Purchase
If you’re not eligible for the Motability Scheme or would rather own your wheelchair accessible car outright, you can buy a WAV directly from Allied Mobility.

The first thing to consider when looking for a wheelchair accessible car is whether you’d prefer to be a rear passenger, upfront passenger or driver. We have brilliant vehicle options for each!
Wheelchair Size

Passengers
Think about how many people you usually travel with and whether you need any additional storage space as this will determine the number of seats and the overall size of the vehicle you require.
Vehicle Features
As well as the transmission, consider what vehicle features matter to you such as Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto, reversing camera, heated steering wheel – even the colour!
