The CEA Card is a national card scheme for disabled film goers who can apply to receive an additional ticket for a companion, completely free of charge, each time they visit the cinema. This initiative, which was set up in 2004, was introduced at participating cinemas across the UK to make movie outings more inclusive and enjoyable for everyone.
How Does the CEA Card Work for Disabled Cinema Visitors?
To be eligible for the CEA Card you, or the person you’re applying on behalf of, must be in receipt of one of the following:
- Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- Attendance Allowance (AA)
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- Adult/Child Disability Payment (ADP/CDP in Scotland)
- Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
Or hold:
- Severely Sight Impaired Registration (formerly Registered Blind)
- Sight Impaired Registration (formerly Partially Sighted)
You can apply for a CEA Card online through the official CEA Card website. The card requires a one-time administration fee (£6.00), and once approved, it’s valid for you and your companion to enjoy the magic of the big screen for one year before reapplying for an updated card.
The complimentary ticket is for someone who can provide you with appropriate assistance, such as:
- helping you move around the cinema including finding and taking a seat;
- helping you leave the cinema in the event of an emergency;
- accompanying and/or helping you use the cinema’s toilets;
- helping you buy refreshments, etc.
Lights, Camera, Access
This scheme was meant to provide one way for cinemas to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ for guests with disabilities, in acordance with the Equality Act 2010. Almost 90% of cinemas across the UK accept the card. Here’s a list of participating cinemas you can search before booking tickets.
Even cinemas that do not accept the CEA Card will still need to make reasonable adjustments, such as having disabled parking spaces. This means you and your companion can park your wheelchair accessible vehicle with ease, access the cinema and have a jolly good time!
