From the Lake District to the Scottish Highlands, the UK is home to some of the world’s most beautiful and popular rugged landscapes. While it is thought that many of these hikes and breath-taking views are only reachable by able-bodied people, Freedom Wizard is changing that, one wheelchair at a time.
Founded in 2016, Freedom Wizard makes some of the UK’s most uneven treks accessible to the disabled community through their fleet of all-terrain wheelchairs. With a variety of models to suit different disabilities, the charity ensures users can enjoy a safe and active day outdoors.

The not-for-profit organisation was founded by Allie Pennington and Jeanette Williams. Allie herself had to have leg reconstruction surgery on both legs and feared for her active lifestyle.
She commented: “I need to be outdoors and in the mountains all the time. I hate gyms!”
After some extensive research, she discovered the BOMA7 wheelchair, which allowed her to continue hiking with her friends. Calling on her love of the outdoors and exercise, alongside Jeanette, Allie wanted help fellow adults with limiting conditions remain active. To date, they have helped 107 people enjoy the thrill of summit-seeking across the UK.
Allie and Jeanette strive to spread awareness of both the social and practical limitations for wheelchair users seeking an active outdoor lifestyle. With various fundraisers, events and challenges, Freedom Wizard vie to make their services as accessible as possible to anyone looking for a day out.
Allie enthused: “We’re currently raising funds to afford a chair that has a joystick control but also an attendant override. This would allow us to offer our services to those with quadriplegia.”
