Calls to Make London More Disabled Friendly

Disability group, Inclusion London, is calling for more funding to be made available to help make disabled vehicles used in public transport within London more “accessible, affordable and reliable”.

The calls come in response to the Mayor’s Transport Strategy Accessibility Implementation Plan, which was published last year.  The Plan sets out funded and unfunded improvements to be made by 2031.

Accessible Disabled Vehicles

Having examined the Mayor’s Plan, Inclusion London has made several recommendations to help ensure the needs of disabled people are catered for under the Plan.  The main recommendation is that disabled people should be “consulted at an early stage of the design of services and vehicles”.

Other recommendations include that Transport for London (TfL) man all their stations and have staff available to assist disabled people and that all stations should have design elements that increase accessibility for disabled people such as ramps, good lighting and audio-visual information.

With an estimated 1.4 million disabled people living in London, Inclusion London claim an accessible and affordable transport system is the key to enable disabled people access to all of the opportunities available in the UK capital.
