Capability Scotland’s first ever half marathon proved a massive success, with four teams conquering the arduous 13 mile course.
The leading Scottish disability charity’s event brought together people with and without disabilities to overcome a number of obstacles on the difficult route. Spanning from the Pentland Hills to Arthur’s Seat, the route took teams into the heart of Edinburgh, culminating in a steep climb to the famous landmark.
Facing the Challenge
Valerie Watt, captain of the Lanarkshire team, Paradventure, was a keen walker before a car accident 15 years ago. Valerie worked with volunteers from Paradventure, an organisation formed to help people with disabilities experience the great outdoors. She completed the half marathon in a special off-road, all-terrain wheelchair.
Val comments: “The whole day was great, a fantastic achievement for everyone who took part – everyone worked so well together in their teams. This was the kind of outdoor activity I used to love doing before my accident but I didn’t think I could do it anymore. Now I know anything’s possible and can’t wait for the next challenge.”
Important Cause
Head of Fundraising at Capability Scotland, Margaret Clift McNulty, added: “Watching the teams work together was inspirational and I’m sure that the day will be successful not only in generating much-needed funds, but also highlighting what can be achieved when people with disabilities have access to the great outdoors.”
