First Deaf Man to Sail Around World

A teacher from Glasgow has become the first deaf sailor to travel around the world single-handedly.

Father of two, Gerry Hughes, arrived in Troon to an enthusiastic welcome from his friends and family after spending a gruelling eight months at sea.

After finishing, the 55-year-old revealed his teenage dream was to complete the 32,000 mile voyage. The challenge saw him pass all five capes of the southern hemisphere as he made his way around the world, after setting off on 1st September 2012.

Lifelong Dream

Mr Hughes commented: “The last eight months have been amongst the toughest of my life but despite all the challenges of the expedition, it has been a period I have thoroughly enjoyed.

“It has been a lifelong ambition to sail around the world, so it’s difficult at the moment to comprehend what I have finally achieved. Sailing has always been my first love and it provided a real escape from my deafness when I was a youngster.”
