Internet search giant, Google, has announced plans to invest millions of dollars into funding technology to help people with disabilities as part of an initiative called ‘The Google Impact Challenge: Disabilities’.
Google.org, the charitable side of the company, is planning to spend up to $20 million on non-profit organisations using new technology to “increase independence for people living with disabilities.”
Impact Challenge
Google are also asking disabled people to share with them what technology they would like to see developed and which issues should be tackled with the money. Director of Google.org, Jacquelline Fuller, says: “The Google Impact Challenge: Disabilities will seek out non-profits and help them find solutions to some serious ‘what ifs’ for the disabled community.
“We will choose the best of these ideas and help them to grow by investing in their vision, by rallying our people and by mobilising our resources in support of their missions.”
Google say they’re committed to helping those with disabilities.
Accessible Products
Along with providing a financial boost to existing organisations, Google have also pledged to ensure that their own products and services are accessible and of benefit to disabled people. With products like a self-driving car and kitchen utensils for people with hand tremors already in development, Google say they’re committed to helping those with disabilities.
Jacquelline adds: “Historically, people living with disabilities have relied on technologies that were often bulky, expensive and limited to assisting with one or two specific tasks. But that’s beginning to change; together we can create a better world, faster.”
