Mobility Cars Help Teenagers Achieve Goals

Disabled teenagers in East Anglia are being encouraged to learn how to drive, through the use of mobility cars with special driving aids.  The initiative is part of efforts to help youngsters overcome disabilities which could hinder them getting into work or further education.

Disabled motorists’ charity Mobilise held an event in Norwich last week to raise awareness of the driving options available to disabled youngsters.

Richard Fox, who has cerebral palsy, said an adapted mobility car was a “fantastic thing to have.  If I could inspire someone to learn how to drive, that would be brilliant.”

Driving to Improve lives

One in every 20 children in the UK are disabled and Rob Sweeting, a driving inspector who specialises in teaching disabled youngsters, believes that learning to drive can empower young people to improve all aspects of their lives.

He said: “Disability is not necessarily a bar to driving and learning to drive can teach a level of independence which can be lacking within the general education system, whilst also opening doors to a whole raft of new experiences including further education and employment possibilities.”
