New Cycling Track for Disabled

A new cycling track designed specifically for people with disabilities will open it’s doors later this year in what has been described as a ‘first’ for Scotland.

The new Highland Cycle Ability Centre is due to launch later this spring and will be open to schools, community groups and both disabled and able-bodied cycling clubs.

Purpose-built

The 1km track at Cantray, near Inverness, has been funded by charities, trusts and Sportscotland at a cost of £250,000.

The purpose-built facility will be fully equipped with tricycles, hand cycles, tandems for visually impaired cyclists and detachable tandems for wheelchair users.  It’s hoped the new centre will encourage more disabled people to take up cycling.

The project has been led by Cawdor-based Watermill Foundation, which hopes the centre will help to build on the legacy of the London Paralympics.

Scottish athletes won 11 of Great Britain’s 120 medals at London 2012 with Neil Fachie, Craig Maclean, Aileen McGlynn and Karen Darke all collecting medals in cycling events.
