Parliamentary Inquiry on Disability Transport

An inquiry has been set up to investigate the effectiveness of legislation relating to transport for disabled people.

In 2009 the UK government approved the UN Convention on the rights of people with disabilities.  The Convention lays out the legal obligations of member countries to promote and protect the rights of people with disabilities in all areas of life, including access to wheelchair vehicles transport.

The Transport Committee has set up the inquiry to see how well the legislation is working and to highlight any areas which could be improved further.

What’s Your View?

As part of the inquiry the committee is asking for written evidence to be submitted from any individual or organisation who is affected by, or has a view on, the current legislation.

Issues to be looked at include:

• Is the legislation relating to transport for disabled people working?
• Is it thorough enough?
• How effectively is it enforced?
• Is information relating to services easily accessible?
• How good is the assistance provided by public transport staff?
• Are staff aware of the needs of people with different disabilities?
• What can be learnt from transport provision during the Paralympics?
