Swansea is Disability Confident

The Welsh city of Swansea has become the first place in the UK to earn the status of ‘Disability Confident’ for their commitment to helping disabled people into work.

The Disability Confident campaign was launched two years ago by Prime Minister David Cameron and is aimed at encouraging employers to be confident when employing people with disabilities.

The city was awarded the title at a conference attended by representatives from over 70 employers.  Employment and training organisation, Delsion, helped head the campaign and worked hard to get local employers on board.  Representative, Julian John, said this: “It was a fantastic event and I’ve been overwhelmed at the engagement and support that we’ve received from employers in Swansea for our initiative.”

Keep Engaging

He continues: “To receive the official status and be recognised as the first Disability Confident city is just wonderful.  However the hard work starts now to keep engaging and enabling organisations to employ more disabled people.”

Julian also added praise for local Swansea MP Carolyn Harris and her support for the campaign, along with Wales Office Minister, Alun Cairns, who has welcomed the award.
