A new wheelchair-friendly roundabout has been installed in Bryngarw Country Park to help make the Bridgend attraction more accessible.

It’s one in a long list of changes to be made and bosses have promised that more improvements “are on the way.”
The 3rd August was National Play Day and a few youngsters with disabilities tried out the new playground to mark the occasion. Moreover, employees from Bridgend County Borough Council’s Discovery Days programme held play activities and a barbecue for the children.
The new roundabout not only allows room for a wheelchair and it allows an area for disabled and non-disabled children to play and interact together.
Bridgend County Borough Council’s cabinet member for children’s social services and equalities Councillor Hailey Townsend commented: “We recognise the benefits that play can have in helping children and young people to live healthy and active lives, and we are currently supporting an exciting programme of summer holiday activities for children and young people across the county borough in partnership with town and community councils.”
The Best is yet to Come
Upcoming accessibility advances include a direct path from the car park to make it easier for people with disabilities to gain access to the park, new and improved accessible parking bays in the main car park and a new ramp on the tarmac pathway leading up to the playground. The improvements were funded by Bridgend County Borough Council coupled with support from the Welsh Government, other recent additions include an increase in the number of benches along the pathways of the park so that there are more resting points.
Councillor Townsend continues: “We are really pleased that the completed improvements will make Bryngarw Country Park more accessible for disabled people and provide more inclusive play opportunities for disabled children to play with their friends and siblings.”
In October 2015, BCBC entered into a partnership with Awen Cultural Trust to run a range of cultural services and venues across Bridgend County Borough, including Bryngarw Country Park. Awen Cultural Trust plans to continue to make improvements to make its facilities even more wheelchair-friendly. Providing accessible outdoor space and play opportunities is high on the council’s agenda, with Wales being the first country in the world to establish a play sufficiency duty for all local authorities.

Chief Executive of Awen Richard Hughes said: “We are working hard to make sure that Bryngarw Country Park is as accessible as possible to our 200,000 visitors each year. Our volunteer group at Bryngarw has recently been awarded a Tesco Bags of Help grant to improve the access to the Woodland Garden and orchard, which will open up these areas of the park to visitors with limited mobility.
