A project in Bristol is helping people with learning disabilities to get mobile by providing travel buddies for those who find it challenging using public transport.
The Brandon Trust’s Travel Buddy Project was set up in 2009 and aims to give participants the skills and confidence needed to embark on a journey using public transport. The idea is to offer a different type of transport service to the more traditional approach of using taxis or a parent/carer providing lifts. The ultimate goal is for the person to become an independent traveller.
Positive Effect
The scheme works by training people with learning disabilities and then paying them to teach others the skills needed to travel independently.
Before the scheme was set up many people were totally reliant on their families if they wanted or needed to go out for work or social activities. Travel Buddies allow people with learning disabilities to become more independent by teaching them how to read timetables, understand routes and speak to transport staff.
Disability Focus
Summing up the value of the initiative, project leader Jo Pilbeam said: “It’s brilliant because it’s run for and by people with learning disabilities. Using public transport can be a real puzzle and we’re helping to bring together and join up the pieces of the jigsaw to make it easier.
“It’s about giving people independence, getting them empowered and giving opportunities.”
