Wheelchair Basketball Finalists

Teams from the South and South East will fight it out with home favourites Sheffield  in the GB womens wheelchair basketball Championship Finals next month.

League leaders Aspire Force, from London will be joined in the finals by Vixens, from Buckinghamshire and Eastern Blue Stars, from Suffolk.  Currently in second place in the wheelchair women’s league are Sheffield Steelers, who complete the four teams through to the big decider at the EIS arena in Sheffield.

Wheelchair Basketball League

Last month teams from around the UK gathered at the University of Warwick to battle it out in the Wheelchair Basketball National Women’s League for a place in the Championship Finals in May.

The tournament was hailed a great success with the best female players from across the country taking part.  Among the stars on show were hopefuls for Team GB, as they continue in their preparations for the London Paralympics next year.

Fans of the sport were invited along to watch the frantic action for free.  The event also allowed spectators the opportunity to catch a glimpse of next year’s Paralympic stars.

Wheelchair Stars for 2012

British Wheelchair Basketball’s Women’s Development Officer, Helen Goss, said: “This is a really exciting time for wheelchair basketball in the run up to London 2012, with the women’s game improving in standard all the time.

Yvonne Waft, seven times Paralympian, took part in the tournament and commented: “The women’s game has really come on since I quit in 1998.  It’s great to see more women playing wheelchair basketball than ever before.”
