Last month Manchester welcomed some of the world’s best wheelchair dancers as the city hosted the UK’s first International Wheelchair Dance Sport Championship.

The event attracted dancers from the Netherlands, Germany, Malta and Slovakia as well as teams from around Britain.  UK entries picked up one gold, two silver and three bronze medals throughout the competition.

Wheelchair Dancing

The Wheelchair Dance Championship was hailed as a great success and saw the UK finally established on the international wheelchair dance scene, recognised throughout the world under the umbrella of the International Paralympics Committee (IPC).

Wheelchair dancing is not only for those using standard or electric wheelchairs. If you walk with a frame, crutches or just have difficulty in walking, you can also dance in a chair.

The Thameside Wheelchair Dance Club has attended a number of Disability Awareness Days at schools and day centers, trying to promote and develop Wheelchair Dancing. The club runs an after school session at Kingsdown School for Disabilities, Southend on Sea and a weekly adult club teaching Ballroom, Latin and Social dancing.

The number of wheelchair dance instructors throughout the country is gradually growing so why not try it for yourself?  For more information call Geoff Howlett on 01702 477697.
