Wheelchair Quest Spans 5,000 Miles

Wheelchair user Peter Donnelly, from Liverpool, is planning on travelling 5,000 miles using public transport.  His journey – from Bangladesh to the UK – looks set to be a major challenge and is unlikely to include many wheelchair accessible vehicles!

Peter, 24, decided to undertake the challenge to raise funds for the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) in Dhaka’s outskirts, where he has been based recently while carrying out volunteer work.

The journey will take Peter across 14 countries including China, Russia and Germany before reaching the UK.  He is hoping to raise around £5,000 which will go towards funding treatment, training and wheelchairs for a spinal rehabilitation centre in Dhaka.

Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles

Mr Donnelly was injured four years ago in a motorcycle accident and has used a wheelchair ever since.  Much of his journey will involve using public transport, largely without the benefit of modern wheelchair access vehicles, making his mammoth trip all the more challenging.

Explaining his reasons for undertaking the trip Mr Donnelly commented: “The first reason I’m doing this is that I’m raising money for the CRP, which does an amazing job in one of the poorest countries in the world.  Secondly, I’m doing it to raise awareness of what can be achieved when using a wheelchair and how everything in your path might not be perfect but it is still possible.”
